Pupil Premium 2014-2017
Department for Education data from 2012 shows that nationally only 38% of pupils eligible for the pupil premium achieved five or more A*-C grades including English and maths in GCSE exams, compared with 66% of all other pupils The Pupil Premium is an allocation of additional funding provided to schools to support specific groups of children who are vulnerable to possible underachievement. These include pupils who are entitled to free school meals (FSM), those looked after by the local authority and children of armed service personnel. The intended effect of this funding is to accelerate progress and raise attainment.
It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility. For a detailed report, click the link. This was, and continues to be, used as follows in order to maximise the progress of pupil premium pupils.
- To ensure attendance of children eligible for FSM is consistent with whole school targets.
- To ensure that the children who qualify for free school meals have their needs clearly identified and their progress closely monitored through school.
- To support the cost of employing an Inclusion Team: Inclusion Manager, Learning and Behaviour Support Manager, Federation SENco and specialist Inclusion Teacher working to support pupils in overcoming barriers to learning.
- To provide high quality staff training to ensure quality first teaching.
- To provide intervention programmes for underachieving pupils and those with SEN (Special Educational Needs) who need a boost to their learning in order to reach their potential; for example small group reading, writing or maths tuition.
- To use additional teaching hours to provide a targeted level of support to some of our most vulnerable children so as they can make the progress expected of them.
- To support the cost of employing a teacher to deliver Forest School as we focus on the wider skills that pupils need to become successful adults.
- To provide specialist music tuition, music therapy, promoting increased aural awareness, self discipline and improved motor skills.
- To use additional teaching time to provide children with individual feedback and ensure they are aware of their targets.
- To provide additional teaching hours in years 5, 6 and 7 Mathematics and English to enable pupils to be taught in smaller groups.
- To provide new experiences and challenging activities through a visits and trips programme.
- Ensure pupil premium pupils have equal access to extra-curricular activities.
- Ensure that Pupil Premium students can access residential visits
The impact of this work was evident in the attainment of pupil premium pupils at the end of Key Stage 2 from their starting points at St. Nicholas in Year 5. There is also evidence within pupil specific interventions that pupils made good levels of progress. The school has highlighted Pupil Premium as an area for further development in 2015-2016.
